According to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air quality is often two to five times worse than outdoor air.
Why does indoor air quality matter?
Poor indoor air quality can lead to eye irritation, headaches, allergies, respiratory problem such as asthma, and other health concerns.
According to the EPA, since most people spend close to 90% of their time indoors, keeping indoor pollution levels as low as possible is the right thing to do – personally at home and in the workplace!
How can you help improve indoor air quality at your workplace?
In a sealed indoor environment, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are the only effective means to address Indoor Air Quality concerns.
HVAC systems involve the continual cycle of removal of humidity, constant means of air circulation and ventilation of conditioned air, and the use of air filters to remove dust and other contaminants that might be circulating within a confined space.
The simplified diagram notes the typical HVAC cycle of “conditioned air as follows:
Mechanical heat transfer – processes refrigerant or chilled water flows through cooling coils in a HVAC unit.
A Circulating Fan blows chilled air into a supply air ductwork system which distributes chilled conditioned air as needed. This cooling process also removes humidity from the environment by a drainage removal process.
The cycle of “conditioned” air flow starts from the supply air ductwork, circulates through an occupied space and is “returned” back to the HVAC unity through the return air ductwork. The conditioned cycle then passes through air filters which traps dust and other particulates on the filter medium. The air conditioned cycle then repeats itself.
For this “conditioned air cycle” to perform most efficiently, service maintenance should be scheduled on a regular basis. This maintenance service ensures that the coil condensate pans are clean and air filters are removed and replaced.
The typical air conditioning cycle can be greatly improved upon and enhanced with the introduction of updated technology including Ultraviolet lighting (UVC) and ionization treatment of the air flow cycle.
Studies and actual usage have demonstrated that constant HVAC air flow through UVC and ionization processes have immediate and lasting air quality attributes. In addition to reducing energy consumption, UVC and ionization also provides operational efficiencies and major cost savings overall.
Sometimes even with proper and efficient air flows, particulates may enter and settle in the supply and return ductwork system. In the event particulates accumulate in the ductwork it may be advisable to engage professionals to inspect, clean and disinfect the interior of air ductwork systems.
